Building Water Security
All of SMS's water comes from rain and springs. Due to heavy use at gathering and drought conditions, we spend multiple weeks each fall without sufficient drinking and bathing water, and must truck in 200 gallons of municipal water multiple times per week. We would like to build water security by tapping new springs, servicing old wells, getting another 5000 gallon cistern for storing drinking water, and adding more rain collection barrels to the bathhouse.
Goal: $6,000
Sealing the Main Cabin
The main cabin, our much beloved antique log cabin building, is great for many things, but staying warm in the winter is not among its fortes.
Redoing the library floor. The joists have been lifted and supported, but the floor itself has gaps and no subfloor layer. This project would involved removing everything from inside (including the library shelves), prying up the original floor boards, adding insulation and subfloor, then resetting the original floor boards. This would most likely occur during a work gatherette and need many hands. Goal $600
Sealing the chimney – A woodstove and chimney pipe were installed in the original stone chimney, but the top was never sealed. Rain comes right on in, and rusts out the stove and pipe, making it mostly unusable. We need a mason knowledgeable in sealing chimneys.
Upgrading windows – All of the windows in the kitchen and front room are single-paned and don’t seal very well. This project would need a budget for buying new windows, then help installing them. Goal $2500
Accessibility Vehicle
Each gathering, we rent a golf cart to help elders and folks with disabilities or injuries to move more easily around the land. We'd like to have an accessibility vehicle of our own — something a little more heavy duty for our rocky trails, to use year-round!
Goal: $10,000
Holding up the Barn
The main log structure of the barn has fallen off its foundation and some logs have rotted away. Oh, cool. We have been trying to locate someone with expertise in log barn restoration without much success. We need a Restoration Expert to help us create a plan.
B-simple
Once upon a time there was a rustic structure built to house beekeeping equipment. Then people moved in! And a solar electric system! Our multi-purpose “Bee-complex” is slowly but surely being reclaimed by the insects and elements. We have long been dreaming of a new, more modern building to provide accessible guest housing and general visitor space. We seek a project lead to coordinate architectural design and construction. We currently have $10k earmarked for this project.
